SUMMARY:Song Cycles
DESCRIPTION:Asian Cultural Council (ACC) fellow Maria Christine Muyco will be presenting her song cycles on Saturday\, April 27\, at 3:30 PM. The program includes Voices Lost in Industrial Winds with Nicole Eliev (soprano) and Yuk Shing Tang (pianist); and Ohoy with Titus Levi (baritone) and Amber Liao (pianist). These songs have lyrics from the indigenous peoples that Muyco collaborated with (Jesus Insilada\, Perla Supetran\, Feliza Castor\, Jocelyn Evangelyo\, Master Sangkram\, Kaying Lor\, and Bidayuh Wynner) during her fieldwork in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. In the songs\, these people tell about encroachments of various forces in their communities\, while they reflect on ways to constructively survive.  \n Concert is FREE and Open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Piano sonatas of Dmitri Shostakovich\, performance and remarks
DESCRIPTION:Piano Sonata No. 1\, Op. 12 (1926)\, is the composer’s first substantial work. Concise in structure and dense in emotional content\, Op. 12 demonstrates Shostakovich’s overt intellectualism and interest in the burgeoning avant-garde. Piano Sonata No. 2\, Op. 61 (1943)\, dedicated to the memory of Leonid Nikolaev\, stands in opposition to Op. 12 with its accessibility of language and structure. \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Ramin Arjomand Solo at The DiMenna Center
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and composer Ramin Amir Arjomand presents an evening-length solo improvisation. \nRamin Amir Arjomand’s work is born of a complex interplay of cross-cultural creative impulses. His long-form improvisations achieve extremes of sound intensity\, pushing the limits of spontaneous thinking while seeking simultaneously\, and equally intensely\, a compositional unity characteristic of fully-notated music. Their sound structure draws as much on a nineteenth-century European approach to piano resonance as on the unfettered sensibility of American avant-garde jazz. Beneath the surface lies a musical ethos that quietly echoes the Iranian dastgāh tradition.

SUMMARY:Explorations Vol. 6: Time and Breath
DESCRIPTION:New Thread presents its 6th Explorations concert with a program of cutting edge works for saxophone\, drawing from meditative breath\, temporal flux\, sine tone clusters\, dissembled instruments\, and vocalization. \nThe concert opens with Neva Derewetzky‘s “small voices\,” exploring time and air\, growing from meditative breath to sweeping dynamic swells. Derewetzky writes the saxophone “is an instrument that begs to run… For just a few minutes\, I want the instrument to be patient. To take a breath and to wait.” Michael Seltenreich‘s “Ornamentation 1” uses flux in tempo to build a constant pulsing line. The work builds harmonically while always centered around the push-and-pull of time. The program continues with commissioned works by New Thread founding member Erin Rogers and by Victoria Cheah. Erin Rogers‘ “Foliage” utilizes timbral and harmonic shifts to produce slow motion color changes in a gradual transition to noise. Victoria Cheah‘s “Walk for a shell” incorporates fixed media playback alongside the saxophone quartet\, exploring how actions along a path may connect you to others. Cheah writes “Pilgrimage journeys put time and effort to work at covering a distance in an offering of respect. Walk for a shell attempts this respect with gestures of tuning\, ghosts of words exchanged\, and offerings of effort.”
