SUMMARY:Weinberg\, Ustvolskaya\, Klein
DESCRIPTION:The second of the concerts\, on May 13th at the Dimenna Center\, will include two American premieres of works of the great composer\, who has only recently been rediscovered\, Mieczysław Weinberg: his Clarinet Concerto op. 104 and his last work\, the 4th Chamber Symphony op. 153. Rounding out the program will be Gideon Klein\, a composer destined for greatness\, but whose life was tragically cut short in Auschwitz\, and Galina Ustvolskaya Shostakovich’s favorite student who broke with him\, because she felt he compromised too much. Those two pieces together with Weinberg would make a program of great poignancy.

SUMMARY:Lisgar CI Spring Music
DESCRIPTION:Lisgar Collegiate Institute\, a high school for grades 9 to 12\, was established in 1874.  The music program began in 1918 with the orchestra being formed to raise the spirits of students from the daily news of WWI casualties.  At the end of the war\, the ensemble became an official school orchestra\, the first ever Canadian Secondary School Orchestra. This initiative led to the addition of music to the school curriculum.  The Band was started in the 1950’s. \nLisgar music groups perform many concerts in the community\, and at National and Regional festivals.  Smaller ensembles have been invited to perform in churches\, at chamber concerts\, in museums and art galleries\, at official functions in the Houses of Parliament\, and the Senate.  Performing tours have taken the senior groups to cities across Canada\, the United States\, Finland\, Russia\, England\, The Netherlands\, Austria\, China\, Italy and Germany. \nThis concert is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook Premieres!
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Chamber Players\nDirected by Eduardo Leandro \nJoin us on April 10th (Staller Center Recital Hall) and April 11th (DiMenna Center for Classical Music\, NYC) to hear four new premieres by John Fitz Rogers\, Earl Maneein\, Mark Nowakowski\, and Paula Matthusen as part of our annual Stony Brook Premieres! \nIt is said that “history doesn’t repeat itself\, but it often rhymes.” Like our present historical moment\, John Fitz Rogers’ Shadow Rhymes echoes other times and places\, always with an undercurrent of tension that manifests in different ways throughout the piece. \nEarl Maneein’s Outrage explores cycles of violence\, the corrosive nature of power and ambition\, nihilism\, destruction and its accompanying futile\, dead end philosophies in musical form. \nMark Nowakowski’s Hildegard Songs is a work that draws deeply from the life and witness of the famous 12th-century nun\, author\, composer\, and mystic. Nowakowski draws inspiration from the melodic contours of Hildegard’s chant to the fiery content of her mystical visions. \nPaula Matthusen’s just one and one and one draws its inspiration from the chapter entitled “Threshold” from Norma Kaweloku Wong’s book When No Thing Works. The piece investigates the ideas of potential thresholds across the performers and various motive materials they play as a way of engaging with what describes as areas between “the chaos of collective acceleration and entering the slipstream.” It holds present the perspective Wong offers – “So take a breath. Take a step.”
