SUMMARY:Weinberg\, Ustvolskaya\, Klein
DESCRIPTION:The second of the concerts\, on May 13th at the Dimenna Center\, will include two American premieres of works of the great composer\, who has only recently been rediscovered\, Mieczysław Weinberg: his Clarinet Concerto op. 104 and his last work\, the 4th Chamber Symphony op. 153. Rounding out the program will be Gideon Klein\, a composer destined for greatness\, but whose life was tragically cut short in Auschwitz\, and Galina Ustvolskaya Shostakovich’s favorite student who broke with him\, because she felt he compromised too much. Those two pieces together with Weinberg would make a program of great poignancy.

SUMMARY:Lisgar CI Spring Music
DESCRIPTION:Lisgar Collegiate Institute\, a high school for grades 9 to 12\, was established in 1874.  The music program began in 1918 with the orchestra being formed to raise the spirits of students from the daily news of WWI casualties.  At the end of the war\, the ensemble became an official school orchestra\, the first ever Canadian Secondary School Orchestra. This initiative led to the addition of music to the school curriculum.  The Band was started in the 1950’s. \nLisgar music groups perform many concerts in the community\, and at National and Regional festivals.  Smaller ensembles have been invited to perform in churches\, at chamber concerts\, in museums and art galleries\, at official functions in the Houses of Parliament\, and the Senate.  Performing tours have taken the senior groups to cities across Canada\, the United States\, Finland\, Russia\, England\, The Netherlands\, Austria\, China\, Italy and Germany. \nThis concert is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook Premieres!
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Chamber Players\nDirected by Eduardo Leandro \nJoin us on April 10th (Staller Center Recital Hall) and April 11th (DiMenna Center for Classical Music\, NYC) to hear four new premieres by John Fitz Rogers\, Earl Maneein\, Mark Nowakowski\, and Paula Matthusen as part of our annual Stony Brook Premieres! \nIt is said that “history doesn’t repeat itself\, but it often rhymes.” Like our present historical moment\, John Fitz Rogers’ Shadow Rhymes echoes other times and places\, always with an undercurrent of tension that manifests in different ways throughout the piece. \nEarl Maneein’s Outrage explores cycles of violence\, the corrosive nature of power and ambition\, nihilism\, destruction and its accompanying futile\, dead end philosophies in musical form. \nMark Nowakowski’s Hildegard Songs is a work that draws deeply from the life and witness of the famous 12th-century nun\, author\, composer\, and mystic. Nowakowski draws inspiration from the melodic contours of Hildegard’s chant to the fiery content of her mystical visions. \nPaula Matthusen’s just one and one and one draws its inspiration from the chapter entitled “Threshold” from Norma Kaweloku Wong’s book When No Thing Works. The piece investigates the ideas of potential thresholds across the performers and various motive materials they play as a way of engaging with what describes as areas between “the chaos of collective acceleration and entering the slipstream.” It holds present the perspective Wong offers – “So take a breath. Take a step.”

SUMMARY:In the Presence of Absence
DESCRIPTION:This concert consists of three newly composed solo works: “How quiet – at the bottom of the lake\, peaks of clouds” for solo violin\, performed by Marina Kifferstein; “Zinnia” for solo percussion\, performed by Ellery Trafford; and “Stillness – seeping” for solo electric guitar\, performed by Alec Goldfarb. \nThese three works are interconnected by three fixed-media electronic pieces that weave together the haunting recitations of poems by the renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. His words\, resonating with themes of loss\, longing\, and hope\, form the emotional backbone of the evening\, grounding each musical piece in a shared reflection on grief and mourning.

SUMMARY:What Is American: Rhythm Nation
DESCRIPTION:What Is American: Rhythm Nation is the next issue in PUBLIQuartet’s What Is American series\, a GRAMMY®-nominated album and touring project. This second volume features and celebrates American rhythmic traditions as expressions of bodily autonomy and tacit history-keeping. The program features four new works by Mazz Swift\, Eddie Venegas\, Jeff Scott\, and Pulitzer Prize finalist Jlin\, made possible through a 2024 Chamber Music America Artistic Projects grant supported by the Howard Gilman Foundation. Each piece evokes a distinct rhythmic world\, reflecting the plurality of American movements and protecting the unspoken spirit of their lineage’s narratives.

SUMMARY:X is the new Y
DESCRIPTION:The concept of “X is the new Y” has long been used in culture\, fashion\, and art to suggest a shift in perception or a redefinition of tradition. It plays on the idea that something seemingly unconventional or unexpected can take on the role of the established standard. This dynamic formula highlights how innovation and reinterpretation can breathe new life into what we know\, opening up pathways for a deeper understanding and appreciation of familiar ideas. \nApplied to music\, “X is the new Y” challenges the audience to reconsider how classical works can be experienced. It suggests that a change in instrumentation\, texture\, or setting can reveal hidden layers\, redefine relationships\, and bring fresh energy to compositions that have stood the test of time. This concert embraces this theme by juxtaposing different interpretations and formats of well-known repertoire\, such as presenting Dvořák’s American Quartet—a quintessential string quartet—as a piece transcribed for flute and strings\, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major\, K. 493\, Frank Martin’s Ballade and the world premier of Hannah Selin’s The Soft Moon. \nThe concert features the CreArtBox Core ensemble: \nEmilie Anne Gendron\, violin\nMathew Cohen\, viola\nJulia Yang\, cello\nGuillermo Laporta\, flute\nJosefina Urraca\, piano\nBrian Murray\, Baritone \nANTONÍN DVOŘÁK\nString Quartet No.12 “American” (1893)\nI. Allegro ma non troppo\nII.Lento\nIII.Molto vivace — Trio\nIV.Finale. Vivace ma non troppo \nFRANK MARTIN\nBallade for flute\, strings and piano (1939) \nW.A. MOZART\nPiano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major\, K. 493 (1786)\nI. Allegro\nII. Larghetto\nIII. Allegretto \nHANNAH SELIN\nThe Soft Moon (world premier)\n(Commissioned by CreArtBox with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts)

SUMMARY:SECRETS OF ARMENIA IN NEW YORK
DESCRIPTION:Aram Khachaturian was devoted to ballet music and produced two masterpieces of the genre – Spartacus and Gayane. Distinguished by indelible thematic beauty of which the ‘Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia’ is a perfect example\, the ballets are symphonic in conception and\, in the case of Gayane\, marked by the use of leitmotifs. The Masquerade Suite is a richly contrasted theatre score. These sensitive piano arrangements preserve the very essence of Khachaturian’s music\, maintaining the texture and clarity of the original orchestral scores. Mikael Ayrapetyan is the world’s leading exponent of Armenian piano music and his Grand Piano recordings of music from his homeland have been met with universal admiration.
