At the center of our celebration of Crossing Borders is our second concert, which is devoted to the music of the Ukrainian-American composer, Virko Baley, on the event of his 85th birthday.

Since the start of Russia’s current war against Ukraine, Ukrainian music has taken on new purposes. Each of the works on this program has a function, but their utility goes beyond conventional music for purpose–entertainment, education, …–and serves a function for the composer and their audiences directly related to Ukraine’s last decade.

Yaron Kohlberg, the President of Piano Cleveland and former winner of its prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition, brings a dynamic program of Romantic showpieces and modern discoveries, including works by Schubert, Grieg, Mussorgsky, Guang Ren, and Lalo Schifrin.

Pianists Shijun Wang and Chih-Long Hu, both devoted educators and virtuosic performers, bring an evening of classics from the golden age of the piano, including works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Johann Strauss and Rachmaninoff.

Join andPlay to celebrate the release of their most recent album,“Translucent Harmonies” (Another Timbre, September 2023). andPlay will perform works by Catherine Lamb and Kristofer Svensson, joined by musicians David Adamcyk, Tristan Kasten-Krause, Thea Mesirow, and Corie Rose Soumah. Jonathon Crompton's genre-defying new work for two sopranos, string quartet, alto saxophone, and electric guitar receives its world premiere. Cantata No. 1: An Island Seen and Felt marks a distinct evolution of Crompton's compositional practice, which is rooted in both classical and jazz traditions and heavily influenced by his intensive study of Renaissance counterpoint.

Philippe Treuille will premiere his first flute concerto, Live Forever, featuring flute soloist Daniela Mars, and First Dimension Ensemble, conducted by Jean-Pierre Schmitt.
